MUM Luigi Celleri Mineral Museum

The Mineral and Gemmological Museum in San Piero in Campo is open since 2013, in Campo commun on Elba, and covers two floors of the former elementary school building, renovated to be able to house the precious stones.

The Museum is named after Luigi Celleri (1828-1900), San Piero citizen, who devoted his life to the mineral research on the Western side of Elba Island, working with Raffaello Foresi first, and later under Giorgio Roster e Bista Toscanelli, who had bught the license to dig into the pegmatitic rocks in that area.

Later on, Luigi Celleri was in charge of mineral research for Pilade Del Buono, in order to issue the mineral Museum in the Demidoff Galleria, by la Villa napoleonica di San Martino in
Portoferraio.

On the first floor there is the exhibition area, divided into two big areas, including a functional space for projections and audiovisual teaching. All along the corridors there are information panels that explain more about history and minerals.

The exhibition part consists of 12 shrines. In the museum there are old minerals coming from Campo on Elba, iron minerals borrowed from the Mineral Park in Rio Marina, and an exposition of the Elban rocks where most of minerals are dug from.
One more exhibition place shows the gems, offered by many private donors’ collections, among others by Professor Federico Pezzotta, superintender of Mineral Museum in Milan.
