The morphology of Pianosa
As the name Pianosa suggests (meaning “the flat”), the island has a very low altitude. With its rough triangular shape, it reminds a "steak", with the narrow part pointed North.
Pianosa Island has a coastline of 26 km and its geological conformation is formed by marine sediment, raised just few meters above sea level, with an average height of 10 meters and a peak of 29 meters above sea level in Poggio della Quercia.
The island covers an area of 10,25 km², without reliefs or trees, causing particular exposure to the sun and making rains very rare. The intense sunshine generates a higher average temperature throughout the year than the other islands of the Tuscan Archipelago.
Pianosa's morphology is absolutely different than the other Tuscan islands because of its particular origin. Entirely without reliefs, Pianosa is mostly composed by sedimentary rocks and shell accumulations, which give to this land amazing forms and colors absolutely unavailable in other corners of our sea. Pianosa is the outcropping of a large shallow formed by the overlapping of limestones, marls and shell conglomerates.
