Seafront Marciana Marina
Romantic walk on the seafront discovering the charming Borgo del Cotone (Village of Cotton).
--INTRODUCTION--
Approximately 2.0 km itinerary- Easy route
Starting point: Piazza della Vittoria
Our walk in Marciana Marina starts from Piazza della Vittoria, which is in the eastern part of the country, and head out on the seafront decorated with plants of tamarisks trees sculpted by the wind and salt. From here we reach the medieval Village of Cotton, once inhabited by fishermen and today a romantic neighbourhood in the heart of Marciana Marina with restaurants and apartments for rent.
The Cotton is characterised by tall, colorful buildings surrounding the narrow inlet protected by a natural rock barrier, which provides a barrier to the waves of the sea and which was once used as a natural shelter by local fishermen.
We climb along the typical slide hauling of the fishing boats, some of which remained ashore, and we take, turning right, Via del Cotone which, paved in stone, takes us back in Piazza della Vittoria. Now we continue our walk heading west, along the promenade of Scali Mazzini; we overcome the public park with palm trees, flowers and large pines, and proceed along the promenade Regina Margherita in the direction of the port, dominated by the wonderful Torre Pisana, illuminated in the evening by a beacon that brings out its beauty.
Further, the path of the sidewalk narrows and runs along a tree-lined walkway. Then, we meet the jetty of the sailing club of Marciana Marina and enter in the port area of the country. This stretch is closed to traffic during the evening hours, and the street is animated with market stalls and craft shops where you can go shopping.
Then we can walk along the outer wharf, at the head of which there is an all-round view on the village and behind the Monte Capanne. Here we can also see the great fishing boats and ships, moored to the dock. After that we go on the beautiful beach of Fenicia, onto a rocky and wild cove just behind the port of Marciana Marina.
The romantic Rione del Cotone (Cotton District) in Marciana Marina
On the right side of the promenade, for those who come from the inside, there is the Rione del Cotone (Cotton District), the ancient and romantic fishing village. The old buildings perched on the rocks with facades eroded by the salt and the boats beached just below the houses are the features of the place.
The Port of Marciana Marina
On the left of the seafront of Marciana Marina it is located the port of the country, renovated with the extension of the outer wharf. Quiet in the off season, it becomes very popular in the summer due to the presence of numerous pleasure boats. Majestic and impressive, the Saracen Tower dominates the port. It is the symbol of the country, also represented in the
municipal coat of arms.
